Sandbag and Shelter Links Ahead of Hurricane Ian

TAMPA -- With evacuations ordered for low lying areas in all Tampa Bay counties, thousands of people are looking for a place to go.

Here are some listings. Remember that public shelters are a last resort. Some shelters may not open until Tuesday morning.

Hillsborough County

Pinellas County

Hernando County

Polk County

Manatee County will open these shelters at 8 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Braden River High School (pet friendly)
  • Harvey Elementary School
  • Manatee High School (pet friendly)
  • Myakka Elementary School
  • Mills Elementary School (pet friendly)
  • Bayshore Elementary School
  • Miller Elementary School
  • Freedom Elementary School
  • McNeal Elementary School
  • Gullett Elementary School
  • Rogers Garden Elementary School
  • Lee Middle School
  • Williams Elementary School
  • Willis Elementary School

Several cities and county governments are still furnishing sand and, in some cases bags, to residents ahead of Hurricane Ian. But sand is running out in some places and some cities are counties plan to shut down sandbag service Tuesday midday, ahead of the storm.

The city of Largo is NOT distributing sandbags.

Pasco County is offering bags at these locations:

-- W.H. Jack Mitchell, Jr., Park: 4825 Little Road, New Port Richey

-- Veterans Memorial Park: 14333 Hicks Road, Hudson

-- Magnolia Valley Golf Course: 7223 Massachusetts Avenue, New Port Richey

-- Pasco County Public Works (C-Barn): 30908 Warder Road, San Antonio

-- Land O' Lakes Recreation Center, 3032 Collier Parkway, Land O' Lakes

-- Wesley Chapel District Park, 7727 Boyette Road, Wesley Chapel

Polk County is offering bags at these sites, from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Then these sites will close to cover post-storm recovery.
