Survivors of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 in the Everglades fifty years ago gathering in Miami Springs today to unveil the first memorial marker. 75-year-old Beverly Raposa of Margate was a 25-year-old flight attendant who heard a strange noise coming from the engines and knew something was drastically wrong. With no blankets or first aid kits, Beverly sprung into action walking into the swamp to find survivors by telling herself the alligators would be scared away by the noise and jet fuel. The flight was en route from New York to Miami when it went down in what is one of South Florida's deadliest air disasters, killing 101 people with 75 survivors.
