A massive sewage spill in the Boynton Beach Intracoastal is now under investigation.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection says the city will provide a "thorough summary report" which will include a detailed description of the event, the amount of wastewater released, the city's response and the water quality sampling results.

The investigation comes after the Florida Department of Health issued a health alert on Friday linked to the reported 12 million gallons of sewage into the water last week due to a main break.

While the city and health officials say drinking water was not affected, the alert notes that due to possible bacterial contamination, people should avoid contact with the Intracoastal Waterway near East Ocean Avenue in Boynton.

There is a no-swim advisory while the city has the water tested and the area cleaned up.
