The Florida Legislature has passed a bill that requires people to use public restrooms that line up with their sex at birth.

The Senate and House both gave approval to the legislation late Wednesday. It now heads to the governor, who is expected to sign it.

Supporters say the bill is meant to protect kids and others from members of the opposite sex in a vulnerable moment, while opponents fear it will subject transgender people to harassment.

The legislation passed along mostly straight party-lines, though Stuart Republican Senator Gayle Harrell voted with the Democrats against it, as well as three Republican House members.
