While the governor is touting new proposals to crackdown on illegal immigration, one Florida sheriff is urging President Biden to "protect the people of the United States."
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder sent a letter to the president on Thursday after his Marine Patrol deputies seized a yacht with 59 migrants from Haiti and three suspected smugglers on board.
The illegal immigrants were discovered in the waters off Hutchinson Island, near the St. Lucie Inlet.
Officials say one person on the yacht was bound with duct tape.
The sheriff points out in his letter that had the migrants made it to shore they would have likely "dispersed through" the community undetected. He also notes that a "federal officer related that his unit is overwhelmed and desperate for additional resources."
The letter concludes with Snyder asking Biden to reflect on the oath he took and protect the citizens of this country.
The Coast Guard and Homeland Security are investigating Wednesday's night's incident.
