(Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court is overturning Roe v. Wade, the decades-old decision which legalized abortion nationwide. By a 6-3 vote Friday, the landmark decision was overturned which means a woman's constitutional right to an abortion in the United States is over.
It did so while considering a case out of Mississippi where the state attempted to ban abortion after 15 weeks. Conservative Justice Samuel Alito delivered the majority opinion.
The actual opinion came weeks after Politico published a leaked draft opinion indicating justices were indeed ready to strike down Roe.
Roe v. Wade, which was decided in 1973, states that the Constitution of the United Stats protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction, striking down previously enacted U.S. federal and state abortion laws at the time.
