Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist, was found dead after falling from Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the Indonesian island of Lombok. Marins, a dancer and publicist from Niterói, Brazil, had been hiking with a group of tourists and a local guide when she slipped and fell about 600 meters on Saturday (June 21). Her body was discovered on Tuesday (June 24) following a challenging four-day search and rescue operation hampered by harsh weather and difficult terrain.

Marins' fall occurred during a trek near the crater of Mount Rinjani, which stands at 12,224 feet and is Indonesia's second-highest volcano. The search was complicated by fog, unstable sand, and poor visibility. Indonesian rescue teams used thermal drones to locate her body near the crater wall.

The Brazilian government expressed deep sorrow over Marins' death, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva assured that Brazil's diplomatic services in Indonesia would continue to support her family.

Marins had been traveling across Asia since February, visiting countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand before arriving in Indonesia. Her tragic fall and subsequent search captivated millions in Brazil, with an Instagram account set up by her family amassing over 1.6 million followers. The Indonesian government announced the closure of all hiking routes on Mount Rinjani out of respect for Marins and to facilitate the evacuation process.

Mount Rinjani is a popular destination for hikers due to its breathtaking views, despite its challenging conditions. Marins' family expressed gratitude for the support and prayers they received during the ordeal.
